Visiting Kendal for Lakes Alive?

Visiting Kendal for Lakes Alive this weekend (7-9 September 2018)?

We’re thrilled to share some of the highlights that we’re looking forward to. And to offer ourselves up as a great base for parking and food and drink in between the weekend’s events and performances.

Home Again – Michelle Wren and Love Art Workshops (Saturday and Sunday 10am-6pm)

Visiting Kendal for Lakes Alive

Event description: “Be a citizen in the intricate ginnels of this large scale cardboard townscape, created in collaboration with South Lakeland residents and now you. Peer in explore and listen to the stories of buildings and their inhabitants. Join in adding detail as the town grows over the weekend.”

We love the idea of this interactive townscape. Of course, we’re rather biased because we are based in one of the historic Yards that makes Kendal so architecturally characterful, but watching our favourite buildings emerge is very appealing. Particularly as it’s a very short walk from here down to the Town Hall where there event is taking place.

And you can stop off at another great installation on your way down or back up:

A Mile in My Shoes – The Empathy Museum, Clare Patey (Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm)

Visiting Kendal for Lakes Alive

Event description: “Part shoe-shop, part audio-portrait of a country, this giant shoebox holds a diverse collection of shoes and audio stories that explore our shared humanity, giving you an intimate insight into the lives of strangers.

From a Syrian refugee to a sex worker, a war veteran to a neuro surgeon, visitors are invited to walk in the shoes of a stranger whilst listening to their story. Love, loss, grief, hope and joy are all to be found here as we take you on an empathetic and physical journey.”

Located just below the town’s Birdcage (at the top of Finkle Street) this is a must-visit installation just a stone’s throw from our cafés, restaurants, shops and central car park so there’s no excuse for missing it out of your itinerary.

There’s a massive eighteen events, installations and performances in Abbot Hall Park in Kirkland running over the weekend. It’s incredibly hard to choose from the choirs, dancers (a bicycle ballet, Banghra, The Middleton Corpus floating like clouds, and a dancing celebration of women’s suffrage) and artists, but we’ve picked out one event that we know the kids in your party will LOVE:

Giant Drawing Machine – Nick Sayers (Saturday and Sunday 10am – 6pm)

Visiting kendal

Event description: “Use a Giant Pantograph to trace miniature body outlines of a friend directly onto A4 art paper. Create complex geometric flower shapes with a set of Bike Cog Spirographs. Drawings can be taken away. Made by artist Nick Sayers from familiar materials, these contraptions demonstrate maths and mechanics in a fun, interactive way.”

Yes! Bring on the fun maths and mechanics.

Visiting Kendal for Lakes Alive? Use Wainwright’s Yard as your base

Parking: Booths car park is centrally located and offers easy access to the installations and performances in and around the town.

Eating: Book a table at Pizza Express (open from 11.30 am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and fit a delicious meal around your Lakes Alive plans. If you’re heading up to Kendal Castle and Fletcher Park for the evening, Pizza Express is a great place to eat as you wait for night to fall and the full effects of the Chorus and Halo installations.

Drinking: Slate Bar is ideal for a classy coffee during the day or evening drinks – bring a gin flourish to the weekend with their special:

Eating on the go: If you are heading out for events then Booths supermarket has everything you’ll need for a picnic (including their popular meal deal and a hot counter with sausage whirls and bacon butties).

The full Lakes Alive programme can be found here. We hope you enjoy visiting Kendal for the festival!
