Kendal shopping – a Dewhurst family guide

“We are regular visitors who do a spot of Kendal shopping every Saturday morning. Everyone piles into the car and then splits off in different directions to their favourite bits of town. One son volunteers at the Kendal People’s Café. A charity made up of lovely, lively, capable people who turn food that would otherwise go to waste into clever, nutritious meals for diners at their weekly Saturday cafes. Held at South Lakes Foyer, it is tucked away behind the high street near the entrance to the bus station. There’s a lovely welcoming atmosphere and you pay what you can for the fabulous food that is served up – doing everyone good in the process.”

“Whilst middle child is there, I do a mad sprint around my favourite foodie finds to stock up on meals for the family. We eat a mountain of bread a week and it’s important to me that it’s good. So I seek out the Chilean man in the market, who makes his own. I love his spelt loaves that have a soft, open cake-like texture, his ale bread which really tastes and smells beery and wholemeal bread. His pasties go down well as a grab-and-go lunch. He makes me do the adding up – a great mental workout.”

“I also stop at Staff of Life. It’s just off Finkle Street and you need to dive down a narrow alleyway. Simon and Julie Thomas started out from a stall in the indoor market in the Westmorland Shopping Centre and now they supply some of the finest eating places in the county including The Castle Green Hotel, Booths in Kendal, Low Sizergh Barn, Westmorland Farm shops at Tebay Services, the Castle Dairy and Armstrong Ward in Wainwright’s Yard. My final food stop is back in the market place to buy ready to eat fruit and veg, if you have recipe that requires ripe and tasty tomatoes this is the place to come.”

“As I do my dash, my daughter is often sent on a mission to find unique gifts and cards for grannies, aunties and young cousins in Armstrong Ward and La Maison in Wainwright’s Yard. She never comes back empty-handed. Hubby can often be found checking out Armstrong Ward’s sofa collection or cruising the menswear in Crew Clothing or Maya Maya.”

“We all tend to meet up back in Wainwright’s Yard, for a brew at Slate Bar or Pomegranate and Sage – they are both dog-friendly destinations, which keeps the four-legged member of our family, Cawdor the Corgi, very happy.”
