Part of our #secretkendal series of articles, we asked local photographer Ian Wood to give us his top tips for male grooming and styling in Kendal…
Every year, following massive overindulgence in the name of Christmas, many of us take to diets, exercise, share our Strava and so on, which is great, it really is. But how many of us also think about switching up our grooming routine? And by that, I mean our skin, hair and (if you have one) beard?
Kendal is a great place to –
change your style.
define your style.
experiment with your style.
grow a beard.
shave the beard off.
grow your hair.
change your hairstyle.
Let’s start with skincare. First of all, make sure you are well hydrated and find a skincare brand that works for you. I personally love the Bath House range of men’s skincare and shaving products, especially the fragrances, like Cuban Cedar & Lime, Spanish Nutmeg and Fig. There are lots of fresh citrus notes (Lime, Orange, Lemon) and other great natural ingredients (Olive, Bay, and Sage) which are all really great, feel good scents!
The biggest plus is that the fragrance is subtle without signalling ‘chemical’ or being overpowering. Armstrong Ward here in Wainwright’s Yard stock a great range of Bath House products – drop in and have a sniff, there are testers available – you won’t be disappointed!
When it comes to hair, Kendal is spoilt for barbers, my count gets it to 7 in the town centre, all dedicated to men’s hair. You will see products for sale in the window and on the cutting stations, and the stylists and barbers will recommend products that suit your hair and scalp type.
Proper product vs cost – great products such as those by American Crew, (available from The Gentry on Highgate in town) are actually often more cost effective than those in the supermarket as you need so little product – a bottle will last yonks.
Ditch the wet look gel and ask your barber the best way to style your hair, they will be happy to advise and make sure you have the perfect product – treat it as a regime.
OK, that’s the barnet sorted, what about your look? Well, we will talk about style in another blog post. In the meantime, have a gander at the great men’s fashion options in Kendal – there’s something for everyone and every budget.
So there you go, 2019 is your year, be proud of you, go out and get it, and walk tall with your new, groomed look!
