There are certain films, no matter how old they are or how many times we’ve seen them, which are perfect for Valentine’s Day viewing. They include ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘You’ve Got Mail’.
They are all by Nora Ephron – journalist, a blogger, an essayist, a novelist, a playwright, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a movie director who died in 2012. We also love her sharp New Yorker wit, which chimes with Valentine’s Day. She said:
“I have made a lot of mistakes falling in love, and regretted most of them, but never the potatoes that went with them.”
With that mind, and whatever your plans for Valentine’s Day, we hope they include food (and not necessarily just potatoes).
In Wainwright’s Yard, Booths sell Lakeland Bake Love Heart Crumpets. There are four to a packet and they are satisfyingly fat and heart shaped.
There are endless possibilities of course when it comes to what you put on top of them. Here are three suggestions for you:
Avocado, drizzled with dressing or a dash of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
Mashed banana with cinnamon
Warm blueberry and red chilli – yes really. An unbelievably lovely, healthy combination from a recipe in a book by Dale Pinnock, The Medicinal Chef. He says gently warm a punnet of blueberries in a pan until along with a finely chopped de-seeded red chilli.
For traditionalists, who will always link Valentine’s Day with chocolates, roses, and wine, there’s still plenty to choose from at Booths in Wainwright’s Yard, Kendal.
Ferrero Rocher are always popular. More than 4.6 billion pieces of Ferrero Rocher are made worldwide every year, using about a quarter of the world’s supply of hazelnuts. And it took them five years of experiments and practice to get the shape of the wafer just right!
