Walking into the children’s corner at Armstrong Ward in Wainwright’s Yard, Kendal is like entering a floor-to-ceiling treasure trove of beautifully made things for little people. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent or a big kid yourself, there’s so much to explore and it’s lovely to pick something that excites and reminds you of your childhood to take home to your favourite little one.
The clothes are all by small makers and designers and many are local to Cumbria and organic ranges. If your little girl likes to twirl, there are frilly tutus perfect for birthdays – paired with a hair accessory and a ‘number’ t-shirt, so she can show everyone just how old she is. Head over to the toy corner and there’s even a little Maileg mouse to match her outfit.
These beautiful clothes aren’t just for a special occasion. As a first time mum to a 1-year-old little boy, I was given the advice ‘not to save anything for best’. And so we’ve had three pairs of these cool Blade and Rose leggings – they’re pretty thick, so the first was perfect for wearing whilst in a sling during the winter months and we’re now onto the fox ones which provide some padding for a fast crawler. That little sheep, fox, pirate or rainbow bottom following you around the house is just heart-warming.
Traditional wooden toys – the kind that can be loved and passed down through generations; games; books; jigsaws; puzzles and a first Steiff teddy bear for every special baby that enters the family.
These are just some of the discoveries you’ll find in the toy corner. There’s a favourite animal to find for every child; from tiny Maileg mice who sleep in matchboxes, Moulin Roty soft toys and a whole gang of wooden ones including those from across the globe; rhinos, kangaroos and camels.
Decorating a child’s room
If you’re looking to add those special little extras to a new nursery or update an older child’s room, then there’s plenty of playful homeware and accessories to give you some inspiration. These wall hanging felt animal heads are a real statement. They’re also a lovely birthday present idea – it would be very exciting for a little one to pick their own to watch over them while they sleep. We have a soft spot for Harry the fox.
There are also tepees for playing and hiding toys in which are a great idea for a bedroom or playroom.
If you’re looking for a gift for a new baby, luxury lambswool blankets are a perfect addition to a brand new nursery.
