Zero waste shop Kendal

Zero waste shop, Another Weigh, opens in Wainwright’s Yard, Kendal

The not for profit zero waste shop Another Weigh was officially opened in Wainwright’s Yard in Kendal by Lib Dem MP Tim Farron.

The concept behind the business is that customers bring containers to fill with goods and pay for them by weight. The low-cost approach benefits the customer and the planet and all profits go to charity.

On opening the shop, Tim Farron MP said:

“Climate change, habitat loss and biodiversity are the biggest issues we face today. The more people can help to reduce our environmental impact the better. Initiatives like Another Weigh make it easy for people to support the change that is drastically needed so please come and find out how you can take part.”

Another Weigh is dedicated to reducing waste by improving shopping habits to protect the planet through a more sustainable lifestyle. It stocks 400 lines of loose products including cereals, grains, pulses and legumes, nuts and seeds, dried fruits, baking products, snacks, herbs and spices, cleaning and household products, toiletries.

Customers provide reusable containers and select how much they want, reducing packaging and food waste.

Manager Zoe Hedges explains the ethos behind the family business – which she helped set up with Amy Bray, and her parents Chris and Emma Bray.

Zoe says:

“The last 12 months have shortened horizons and given people time to think about how they live – including shopping local and reducing waste.

“We need to make sure we are using the earth’s resources efficiently, without destroying what is there and allowing it to heal, replace and replenish.

“To quote David Attenborough, who said in 2019 – ‘Don’t waste electricity, don’t waste paper, don’t waste food. Live the way you want to live but just don’t waste,’” adds Zoe.

Another Weigh was voted Cumbria Green/Ethical business of the year in 2020 by In Cumbria magazine. Amy was named Cumbria Woman of the Year 2019.
