
Planet-friendly ways to shop in Wainwright’s Yard
Our first stop is the not for profit zero waste shop Another Weigh, dedicated to reducing waste by improving shopping habits. Customers provide reusable containers and select what they want, reducing packaging and food waste.
Another Weigh stocks 400 lines of loose products including cereals, grains, pulses and legumes, nuts and seeds, dried fruits, baking products, snacks, herbs and spices, cleaning and household products, toiletries.
Another Weigh was voted Cumbria Green/Ethical business of the year in 2020 by In Cumbria magazine. And operating profit supports an educational environment charity.
Owners Jacqueline and Andrew at lifestyle store Armstrong Ward have long been fans of John Sankey furniture and have worked with this heritage brand for over 15 years. They’ve just been appointed as lead regional stockist bringing inspiration to Cumbrian doorsteps. And most of all John Sankey furniture also have a commitment to sustainability, which really sits well with Armstrong Ward values. As Jacqueline says “this is not ‘throwaway furniture’ these are legacy pieces to keep and pass on – should you ever want to part with them.
The store also has a range of gifts and toys made from sustainable products.
At Booths, also an independent, family run store selling groceries are signed up to offering Fairtrade products, which means people behind the product you are buying are treated fairly. They also offer organic produce, to reduce the impact of pesticides and herbicides on the environment. And they aim to sell sustainably sourced goods too.
We love their Tony’s Chocolonely range. A company who wants to make chocolate 100% slave free.
