Kendal store first to stock the world’s most sustainable sofas, made in Britain
Jacqueline and Andrew Ward of Armstrong Ward in Kendal are the first business to stock and sell the world’s most sustainable sofa, made in Derbyshire by furniture maker Habbio.
Habbio says they use only materials that are completely recyclable. Adding that its mission is for all its products to avoid the landfill destination of 90% of furniture currently sold in the UK; by offering longevity, flexibility and recyclability.
Adam Green from Habbio says: “We use 90 per cent fewer chemicals than other manufacturers – there’s more formaldehyde in a tomato than there is in our furniture.”
Launched in 2020, the brand is from family-run, furniture makers John Sankey.
Andrew and Jacqueline Ward have stocked John Sankey furniture since 2005 when they opened their independent furniture, homeware and gift store in Kendal’s Wainwrights Yard. It’s now a two-storey emporium of 200 makers, many local and British – plus an online shop.
The couple says that people are much more aware of where things are from, and more so because of all the supply chain issues. And that customers see benefits in buying well-made British furniture and super-sustainable products.
Adam Green says Armstrong Ward are the perfect partner, as he explains:
“Their location is great – on the edge of the Lake District and in a town that takes sustainability seriously. Kendal has the country’s first Climate Change Citizens Jury. Plus, Andrew and Jacqueline offer brilliant customer service and have great knowledge and experience.”
Prices start at £645 for a chair to £1099 for a sofa, which can be self-assembled.
Jacqueline Ward says the range is very flexible and built to last, explaining: “You can change the removable, recyclable covers to freshen things up and add extra seats if you need more space.
Habbio is also committed to the British manufacturing industry, including the staff and the communities that rely on it. As Adam explains:
“Keeping our workshop in the UK means we can look after our people properly – with safe conditions, pay that is at least 20% higher than the living wage and no zero-hours contracts.”
