Piazza Works Complete
We’re pleased to say that essential work on the Wainwright’s Yard piazza is now complete and we’d like to thank everyone for bearing with us while it was carried out.
To enable the works to be undertaken, the original seating, which featured four distinctive slate backs inset with zinc etched panels, was removed and stored.
They paid tribute to Alfred Wainwright’s deep connection with Kendal and the Lakeland fells. Each engraving shares information about one of his beloved fells, a nod to the Yard’s namesake.
Alfred Wainwright, author of the renowned Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells, lived in Kendal, served as Borough Treasurer, and was Honorary Curator of Kendal Museum. His life’s work documenting the fells has helped generations explore the landscapes around us.
The plan had been to refurbish and reinstall this seating; however, their significant weight (each weighing around 150kg) makes it not feasible to reinstate them safely. For now, they are being carefully stored as we explore options for their future.
If you or your organisation would like to give these unique pieces a new home where their heritage can continue to be appreciated, please contact emma@tenstories.co.uk.
