Elsewhere Bar celebrates hugely positive first year
A KENDAL man who held a dream of opening his own café and cocktail bar, after experimenting with recipes during the Covid pandemic, is celebrating 12 successful months in operation next Friday (22 August 2025).
Owner Mark Weighman, inspired by years of travelling to Spain and falling in love with its laid-back lifestyle, set out to create a bar that reflected the authenticity and social buzz of his second home.
“During lockdown, I really got into making cocktails and experimenting with flavours, including using different syrups,” said Mark. “When things opened up again, I realised Kendal didn’t have a place like this — a cocktail bar that made drinks on the spot using fresh ingredients and one that’s at the heart of the community. As soon as I walked into 5 Wainwright’s Yard, I just knew it was the spot.”
Since then, Elsewhere Bar has built a loyal following with its rustic charm and competitively priced and creative cocktail menus. Team members include Lottie and Bekki who’ve been onboard from the start.
Mark says the bar is known for locally sourced produce — beer from Lakes Brew Co., coffee from Farrers who roast in Kendal, and cakes by Ginger Bakers — and for its warm welcome. Regular highlights include Wednesday quiz nights, themed monthly cocktail evenings, and private event hire, complete with bespoke drinks created just for the occasion.
“The best part is meeting new people and trying out new ideas,” said Mark. “We’re not just a bar — we’re a space for people to relax, laugh and enjoy something a bit different.”
Elsewhere Bar is very much part of the Wainwright’s Yard and Kendal community. Mark says they collaborate with neighbours, including Pizza Express, Mango & Malt, Booths and Another Weigh. Plus the Bar supports Kendal BID events and has hosted special evenings for Kendal Mountain Festival.
Looking ahead, Mark plans to launch ticketed wine and cheese nights, introduce a small food menu, and expand private cocktail experiences for birthdays and special occasions.
“We’re just getting started,” he adds. “There’s still so much we want to do, but we’re so thankful to everyone who’s supported us so far. We hope to see lots of people at our anniversary party from 6.30pm on Friday 22 August.”
