Gourd times ahead: five ideas for half-term fun in Kendal
Kendal comes into its own in autumn. The air is crisp and the nearby fells transform with magical shades of amber, rust and gold. October half-term is a great time to enjoy all the simple seasonal pleasures Kendal has to offer. With no need for long journeys or big budgets, here are five autumn activities for your family to enjoy this half-term:
1. Embark on a conker-collecting expedition
Playing conkers is one of autumn’s simplest and most nostalgic traditions. Grab a pair of wellies and head to Fletcher Park, a local conker-collecting hotspot, to search for the perfect contenders. Whilst you’re there, venture to Kendal Castle for panoramic views over the town. Thread your conkers onto sturdy string and let the games begin!
2. Warm up with a hot chocolate from Elsewhere Bar
The best reward for a wholesome walk is a warm drink. Little legs can rest and refuel with a velvety hot chocolate from Elsewhere Bar. Speciality coffee and even stronger drinks are also available!
3. Paint or carve pumpkins
Spend the afternoon carving pumpkins. Select your pumpkins from Booths and watch your kids’ creativity in action as they paint or carve their masterpieces. Don’t forget to roast the seeds for a nutritious snack! Use a candle or LED light as dusk falls to illuminate their creations.
4. Bake some autumn treats
Grab your aprons and get the kids into the kitchen for some baking. Buy ingredients for a golden apple crumble or gooey gingerbread biscuits from Another Weigh. It’s a great way to shop sustainably, and you can buy the exact amount of each ingredient you need.
5. Host a scary movie night
Enjoy your homemade treats in front of the TV, with the lights dimmed and blankets for everyone. You could make it extra cosy by building a den. Host it the old-school way and find a spooky DVD from CEX or Kendal Lions Shop. Think Hotel Transylvania or Hocus Pocus.
