Meet Jacqueline and Andrew Ward – Celebrating 20 Years of Armstrong Ward in Wainwright’s Yard

This year marks 20 years since Jacqueline and Andrew Ward opened Armstrong Ward here in Wainwright’s Yard, Kendal.

Over two decades, they have built a business rooted in thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and a genuine connection with their customers—many of whom have supported them since day one.

When the couple opened the shop in 2005, their aim was simple: to create a welcoming space offering well-made, functional, and enduring products. That vision continues to guide every decision they make. Armstrong Ward works closely with trusted British suppliers, from established makers to new designers taking their first steps in retail. Each product is chosen by Jacqueline and Andrew for its integrity and purpose.

The store has changed and grown over the years, doubling in size and expanding its range to include sustainable homeware, furniture, clothing, and gifts. Initiatives have helped bring emerging designers into the spotlight, while long-standing relationships with brands such as John Sankey Furniture, Emma Bridgewater, Maileg and Moulin Roty remain central to their collection. And another initiative has become a distinctive feature of their calendar, the Armstrong Ward Christmas Shopping Evenings. Traditionally held as a charity event, these evenings combine extended store hours, candlelight shopping, and a raffle to raise funds for local causes.

Responding to customers’ needs has always been at the heart of Armstrong Ward’s success. During the pandemic, when the shop had to close, Jacqueline adapted quickly by offering virtual shopping sessions and a personal delivery service to keep customers connected. Later, when the café closed, the space was reimagined as part of a growing interiors department, reflecting their ability to evolve with changing times.

More recently, the store’s fashion range has expanded, complementing the existing mix of furniture, toys, and gifts. Yet despite the changes, the sense of continuity remains. The team, many of whom are long-serving, play a key role in creating the calm, friendly atmosphere that defines the shop.

As Armstrong Ward enters its third decade, Jacqueline and Andrew continue to take joy in discovering new makers and products. For them, the real reward lies in the relationships that have formed along the way – with customers, suppliers, and staff.

Armstrong Ward stands as a space where homes, families, and community are valued; an ethos that has shaped every one of its 20 years.
