Take a seat in Kendal. The best spots to rest and reflect

Kendal is many things: the gateway to the Lakes, home of mint cake, and proud owner of a thousand grey rooftops. But it’s also a town that’s values a sit-down and is well served with benches.

You’ll find them along the river, at the top of steep climb, or making circles in Market Place. From catching your breath to enjoying a rare moment of Cumbrian sunshine or demolishing a tray bake.

While Kendal’s benches are plenty, we’ve rounded up five, including a few cracking seats in Wainwright’s Yard, which are ideal if you’ve been browsing Armstrong Ward, mooching around Mango and Malt, or picking up some lunch from Booths…

  1. Wainwright’s Yard. With benches on the piazza and off the high street entrance, there are plenty of places to pause in Wainwright’s Yard. Grab a coffee from Elsewhere bar and perch here.
  2. Branthwaite Brow. The bench at the top of Branthwaite Brow offers a great view down towards the River Kent for you and your four-legged friend. We’re pretty sure we’ve seen it covered with a crochet blanket by the owners of the adjacent shop, CoolCrafting.
  3. Birdcage. The Happy to Chat bench in Kendal’s Birdcage aims to encourage friendly conversation between strangers. The initiative is inspired by Manna House, a charity that helps people who are homeless.
  4. Town Hall. Take in the blend of Kendal’s old and new from the Town Hall benches. You’re at the heart of Kendal here, with stories unfolding all around.
  5. Finkle Street. Halfway up the hill on Finkle Street are several well-placed benches. Take a moment to rest here; it’s a great spot for people watching.
